Press Release

June 2014 - In order to meet the needs of our growing customer base, we have opened a 30,000 sq. ft. facility in Tijuana, Mexico.  This facility has a registered ISO Class 8 cleanroom suitable for assembly and packaging of single-use medical devices.  Our Mexico manufacturing team consists of experienced operations, quality, and supply chain personnel capable of assisting our customers in transferring production to this nearshore environment.

Phase 2 Medical Contract Manufacturing ( www.phase2medical.com ) looked far and wide when it came to opening a new offshore medical contract manufacturing facility. After initially deciding that Costa Rica was a prime candidate, the company eventually opened the new plant in Tijuana, Mexico.

While Costa Rica is well known for its medical technology industry, Phase 2 determined that they were actually pricing themselves out of the market, with increased real estate prices, higher wages and a dearth of skilled labor.

"Our medical device clients told us off-shore, lower-cost labor would be important when it came to medical product outsourcing in the future,” said Adam Prime, CEO of Phase 2 Medical Contract Manufacturing. Add higher shipping costs and 18-day shipping times, and Phase 2 Medical began to look elsewhere. After hearing good things about cost, an abundance of skilled labor and the willingness of the economic development agency to work with new companies, Prime and his team began to seriously consider Tijuana.

When it comes to medical product outsourcing, lower cost and close proximity to the U.S. are big deals for us,” Prime said. “Tijuana meets both those criteria.”

By the end of the year, the company expects to employ 20 people in its Tijuana plant. It has a staff of 170 in New Hampshire.
