A single-chip, microfluidic device integrated into a drug infusion system
The use of a silicon and glass microfluidic chip for the analysis of drug delivery is covered in this paper. The microsystem measures the mass flow rate, density and temperature of the fluid pass through the chip and can then determine the volumetric drug flow rate, dose, dose rate, total volume infused as well as detect air bubbles and occlusions and infer drug concentration and the general type of drug present. The performance of the sensors using water and typical intravenous saline, Dextrose and lipid solutions coupled with drug pumps and manual syringes is presented. The application of this technology to improve the accuracy of drug delivery and reduce medication delivery errors is discussed.
